Many people think they are working hard on their search for a new job when
they religiously scan the Sunday classifieds each week. Unfortunately, what
they are really doing is expending 100 percent of their effort on only 25
percent of the possibilities.
A complete job search involves four activities:
1. Researching and contacting employers about possible opportunities
2. Reviewing job leads
3. Networking
4. Preparing a resume and distributing it
Each of these activities has two facets—online and off:
Job Search Activity |
Offline |
Online |
| Research and contact employers | Print telephone books/business directories/employer pamphlets |
Online telephone books/ business directories/ association links/industry sites/employer web pages/etc. |
| Review job leads | Print newspapers/journals/etc. | Online job banks/recruiters/ newspapers/journals/ associations/etc. |
| Network | Meeting with anyone you can through associations/friends/ colleagues (a.k.a. "pressing the flesh") |
Participating in appropriate mailing lists/newsgroups/ chat forums, as well as turning off the computer to make calls and attendmeetings (a.k.a. "face time") |
| Prepare a resume for distribution |
A nicely designed copy as well as a scannable copy printed and ready to mail or present on demand |
A plain-text copy ready to post or e-mail on demand |
However you approach your job search, you cannot put all your eggs in only
one of the available baskets. A successful job search means spreading your
assets across a variety of baskets, combining as many search activities as
possible. While you are the only one who can determine your level of comfort
with any given activity, you need to use at least one facet of each activity
(research, job leads, networking, and the resume) to get the best results from
all your effort. Look at it this way:
• If you don't have your resume in plain text, it won't be easy to respond to
job leads found online.
• If you don't network by attending local association meetings, you could be
missing a chance to meet the people best positioned to help you with your
search.
• If you don't look at the jobs posted online, you could be missing lots of local
opportunities that you've missed in other places.
• If you don't call the employers you've found, you can't speak with them
about possibilities and convince them how much they need you.
Each of these activities is discussed separately in our site.
