Now that you've learned the basics about the internet, conducting online searches, and preparing your resume for potential employers, it's time to find those employers! Online resume posting and job listing sites provide two very distinct options, the first, which is a more passive process; the second requires real dynamism in your job search! Most sites listed here include both resume posting and job listing features. Most of the sites do not specialize in one career field or geographic location; there are some exceptional sites, however, that will provide you with invaluable resources, no matter where you are or what you do. Online Resume Posting Sites Before posting to an online resume bank, be prepared to encounter some possible frustrations, such as offer that don't match your resume or objectives or no response at all. Many of theonline databases are overpopulated and your resume may not get noticed or may be misclassified unless you are using the proper keywords. You can try some of the specialized resume databases, but there's a chance you might miss some of the big recruiters. Have faith, and make sure your resume states clearly and succinctly what you seek. There are three main methods for posting your resume: 1. Form resume databases: job seekers fill out a form about their backgrounds and interests. They may select from a group of keywords which identify their talents. Usually includes contact information. 2. Resume upload databases: job seekers upload or cut and paste their resumes to the database. No forms are filled out. 3. Combination upload/form resume databases: job seekers fill out some basic contact information about themselves, and some other qualifying information (compensation, education level, full- or part-time, location) and upload their resume and possibly cover letter. Online Job Listing Sites In some ways, job listing sites may seem easier to use than the resume listing sites. Generally, you search the sites by keyword, company, or geographic location. However, you can easily end up spending a great deal of time looking through the many job listings posted on these sites. The more sophisticated, resume/job listing sites will forward your resume to employers you select with just one click. How do you start searching? First, think of your resume, especially the objective and your positive past job responsibilities. What did you enjoy doing, and what job aspects would you like to examione more fully? Look at your responses to the career assesment tests you took. Make a keyword list from the results of these processes, and enter some of these keywords into the job listing search engines. In many cases using too many of these keywords might result in too narrow search with no results. If this happens, try a combination of one or two at a time. Identify your geographic area, and start searching!
